Tadjoura is one of the oldest towns in Djibouti, located on the Gulf of Tadjoura on the country's northern coast. Founded in the medieval period, it was historically an important port for the slave and ivory trades in the Horn of Africa. Known as 'the White City' for its whitewashed buildings, Tadjoura is the capital of the Tadjourah Region and a gateway to Lake Assal (the lowest point in Africa) and the Day Forest nature reserve. The town is predominantly inhabited by Afar people.
