Mindelo is the second-largest city in Cape Verde and the capital of São Vicente Island. Located on a natural harbor on the island's northwest coast, it is the country's cultural capital and most cosmopolitan city, known for its vibrant music scene, particularly morna and coladeira, the musical styles popularized by singer Cesária Évora. Mindelo features well-preserved Portuguese colonial architecture and hosts the annual Carnival, considered one of the liveliest in Africa. The city's port, Porto Grande, is one of the deepest in the Atlantic.
